This paper is an input to the Global Federation of Competitiveness Council's annual "Best Practice" publication. Science and Technology have progressed to a point where high levels of investment are required to sustain world-class RD&I in given particular field. Consequently, choosing the optimal position on the research-possibilities frontier is an acute challenge in a small nation such as Ireland with limited resources available for investment. To address this challenge, Ireland adopted in 2012 a new paradigm for public investment in research, known as Research  Prioritisation.
